Timo Meier
ON-ICE VALUE
Top-Six Forward
STRENGTHS
Raw Tools: Meier is a powerful skater with a sturdy 6’0”, 210-pound frame. He’s strong enough to fend off defenders in the corners and fast enough to push them back as he flies through the neutral zone. When you combine those traits with his taste for physical play, he embodies the modern power forward.
Finish: He possesses a deceptively strong wrister that he’s more than willing to fire from anywhere in the offensive zone. He has quick hands in tight and has no trouble converting on the backhand. He understands how to create traffic and deflect point shots as well.
Confidence: You might not expect it from a power forward, but Meier will challenge defenders one-on-one with an arsenal of crafty dekes. Once he gets half a step on you, he’ll lower his shoulder and bowl his way to the net. He’s difficult to stop in open ice.
WEAKNESSES
Shot Selection: He’s trigger-happy to a fault. With his pace and power, he’s often able to gain enough depth to avoid low-quality shots. But when defenses can keep him to the outside, he’ll settle for long-distance bids instead of working toward a higher-percentage look.
Defense: Meier is quite inconsistent on the defensive end. He has the tools to be a solid two-way winger, but he often cheats for offense, looking to gather a head of steam up the ice rather than stopping and ensuring that his team is in position to break out. A bit more patience in his zone would go a long way.
