Tyler Seguin
ON-ICE VALUE
Top-Six Center
STRENGTHS
Finish: Seguin boasts a well-rounded scoring arsenal. Whether he’s firing in stride, unloading a one-timer, or breaking in alone in tight on goaltenders, he can convert at a terrific clip. This diverse approach to offense makes him a hardcover. His release is quick, his shot is accurate, and he has a good feel for when to pick corners versus when to get a bid on a goal.
Speed: At his best, he’s screaming down the ice to create odd-man opportunities. He’s an absolute terror on the rush because of his shot, wheels, and offensive IQ. However, his recent injuries have slowed him down. Hopefully, he can regain that top gear.
Reliable: Though not a Selke-caliber pivot, Seguin is at least a willing defender—which is more than you can say for many star centers. He hustles on the backcheck and maintains inside positioning in his zone. This quality allows his coach to consider deploying him against any competition.
WEAKNESSES
Playoff Performance: Seguin hasn’t exactly thrived in the postseason. Whether youth or health issues are to blame, excuses don’t mean a thing come playoff time. His production plummets in the spring, taking him from a 70-point stud in the regular season to a 40-point afterthought in the postseason.
Passive: He’s seldom an outright liability on the ice, but there are certainly moments when he appears content to tag along for the ride rather than driving his team to victory. He has all the tools required to do so. He needs to put them together with greater consistency.
