T.J. Oshie
ON-ICE VALUE
Top-Six Forward
STRENGTHS
Finish: Oshie has historically converted at a phenomenal rate. This is due to both his shot selection and natural finishing ability. He boasts a heavy wrister, a quick and accurate one-timer from the bumper spot and a deceptive backhand. He’s patient and shifty in tight as well.
Hands: While he’s mostly known as a heart-and-soul forward, he produces some highlight-reel material on the rush. He possesses the hands and timing to catch defenders reaching for the puck. At least once a season, he dangles a defenseman right out of his equipment.
Strength: Despite a modest 6’0”, 187-pound frame, Oshie is built strong. He can hold his own along the boards and is an absolute wrecking ball when he decides to throw the body. His understanding of leverage and low center of gravity come into play here, as he digs into the ice and explodes into opponents.
WEAKNESSES
Careless: His puck management isn’t as reliable as it should be for a veteran. Oshie will sometimes get carried away with his solo forays and attempt to deke through a maze of defenders. He’s also guilty of tossing prayers into traffic instead of looking for the optimal pass.
Skating: Oshie isn’t necessarily slow, but he does lack the top-end speed to maximize his potential on the rush. He can’t take the top off a defense and just pull away with ease. He has to navigate through sticks and bodies to generate his opportunities.
