Josh Morrissey
ON-ICE VALUE
Top-Four Defenseman
STRENGTHS
Shot: Morrissey doesn’t boast a bomb from the point, but his shot is accurate. More importantly, he understands how to get it through traffic, using pump fakes and lateral movement to open up lanes to the net. He isn’t the type of blueliner to just slap pucks into bodies as hard as possible.
Vision: He sees the ice and distributes the puck quite well. While there’s nothing fancy about his game, he gets his team moving in the right direction via simple and efficient decisions. He makes solid stretch passes, while his puck movement at the point is quick and fluid. The puck never sticks.
WEAKNESSES
Defense: Though he earned a reputation as a defensive stalwart early in his career, much of that was a mirage. He takes unnecessary risks at the offensive blue line, doesn’t keep a tight gap in the neutral zone and is often slow to close on potential shooters. In short, he makes life too easy on opponents.
Skating: When he puts his head down and just hustles, he has decent wheels. The problem is he usually finds himself in second gear. This helps him survey the ice as a puck-carrier, but when he isn’t in possession, it also means he’s frequently caught flat-footed against attackers.
