Jason Robertson
ON-ICE VALUE
Top-Six Forward
STRENGTHS
Hockey Sense: Robertson processes the game well, understanding how much space he has to work with and where his windows of opportunity are. He knows when to push tempo and when to dial it back in order for the pieces to fall into place. His sense of timing and situational awareness make it very easy to play with him.
Shot: He possesses a Matthews-like ability to change the release point on his wrist shot. That deception, combined with his tendency to pick high corners, allows him finish at a stellar rate. He’s also effective at slipping a quick shot five-hole as goaltenders attempt to get a read on his cadence.
Size: Though he’s not an imposing figure, Robertson nevertheless leverages his 6’3”, 210-pound frame. Most notably, he capitalizes on his reach advantage by holding the puck out where only he can touch it. He isn’t shy about crashing the net either, and any forward of his size is tough to handle in the trenches.
WEAKNESSES
Skating: Robertson’s top-end speed is merely decent. He can get by, but he isn’t going to leave defenders in the dust through sheer explosion. He’s not the most elusive skater either. This limits his influence in the neutral zone. With that said, his high IQ compensates for that. It’s not some coincidence that he’s often in the right place at the right time.
Defense: As with most young players, Robertson isn’t a finished product in his end. He’s a willing defender, but he does sometimes lose focus and blow his coverage at the point as a result. He could stand to gain some strength in order to perform better in puck battles as well.
