Cole Caufield
ON-ICE VALUE
Top-Six Forward
STRENGTHS
Finish: Simply put, Caufield knows how to score. He possesses a wicked wrist shot with which he can pick corners when given time and space, but he also displays a quick release under pressure. He does a good job of sliding into quiet areas to present high-quality passing options. He doesn’t shy away from the slot either.
Passing: Primarily known for his shot, the up-and-comer is a deft and clever passer as well. If he sees a better option than his own look, he won’t hesitate to set up a teammate in a scoring area. His vision and offensive hockey IQ are already terrific. He’s not a one-dimensional sniper.
Skating: Caufield displays wonderful speed as well, as he can create separation in the neutral zone when carrying the puck or slip behind the defense to break in alone on goaltenders. He may not be known for his wheels, but it’s tough to catch up to him once he gains a step on you.
WEAKNESSES
Size: At 5’7” and 162 pounds, Caufield can struggle to hold his own in the trenches. When he’s forced to battle along the boards, the results are underwhelming. It’s also difficult for him to fend off defenders and maintain possession of the puck in congested areas of the ice. He negates some of that with crisp give-and-go passing.
Defense: As it stands, he plays high-event hockey in a traditionally tight system. He’ll cheat for his chances, drifting near the defensive blue line and often ending up on the wrong side of the puck in hopes that a teammate will spring him for a rush down the ice. He doesn’t support pinching blueliners very well either.
