Blake Wheeler
ON-ICE VALUE
Top-Six Forward
STRENGTHS
Skating: Wheeler possesses great wheels for a man of his size. This allows him to easily find space through the neutral zone. He can also apply significant pressure on the opposition thanks to his speed and reach—whether that’s on the forecheck or backcheck.
Dual Threat: He’s a talented playmaker with outstanding vision and the touch required to exploit dangerous seams. He’s always looking to deliver a quality setup. In addition, he boasts a strong wrister and soft hands in tight. As such, he’s a threat from nearly anywhere in the offensive zone.
Size: At 6’5”, 225 pounds, he cuts an imposing figure. He isn’t really a bruiser, but he will throw body checks and lean on opponents in the trenches. Most importantly, he uses his frame and reach to fend off defenders down low or drive to the net. When he’s determined, there’s virtually no stopping him.
WEAKNESSES
Decision-Making: At his worst, he’s a sloppy, giveaway-prone winger who appears to be going through the motions. His shot selection is also questionable, often tossing pucks toward the net from long distances or poor angles. He overthinks things and is much more effective as an instinctual player.
Defense: Despite his physical gifts, he’s a dreadful defensive forward. He constantly loses inside position and only hustles back to disrupt puck-carriers half the time. He doesn’t lead by example in regard to team defense, frequently hanging his teammates out to dry.
