Drake Batherson Player Bio

Drake Batherson

ON-ICE VALUE
Top-Six Forward

STRENGTHS
Vision: Batherson is a gifted playmaker who frequently sets up his teammates in scoring areas. His hockey sense and 6’3”, 204-pound build allow him to buy time and pick out the most dangerous option. With that said, his assist totals won’t rise until he’s paired with better finishers.

Shot: While he doesn’t pull the trigger that quickly, he’s an accurate and deceptive shooter. If you give him time, he’ll pick corners. If he’s in tight, he has the soft hands to fool goaltenders. His dual-threat ability is particularly evident on the power play, where he can punish defenses with a rocket from the circle or a terrific seam pass.

Poise: Above all else, Batherson is comfortable with the puck on his stick. He never panics, instead taking his time to survey the ice for the best available play. If there’s nothing worthwhile, he has the wheels to extend the attack and wait for an opening to develop.

WEAKNESSES
Defense: He has yet to demonstrate a willingness to dig in defensively. A winger’s job is fairly simple in their end, but Batherson nevertheless loses his assignment by falling asleep or sacrificing inside positioning in hopes of launching a counterattack. Focusing on defense would benefit his transition game and offensive contributions.

Decision-Making: Batherson doesn’t make poor decisions, but he takes his sweet time making them. Whether he’s looking to unleash a wrister or feather a pass into the slot, he seems to require serious elbow room to execute his design. When facing the best defenders in the league, you need to think on your feet.
